[pct-l] RE: PCT-L digest, Vol 1 #312 - 7 msgs

Marion,

You might want to consider a Weimaraner,
http://www.geton.net/pets/dogs/pictures/weimaraner/main.htm If you wanna
see what they look like. They are a hound/bird dog, so they are very easy
to train and very obedient. In addition, as most hounds they can cover lots
of distance and various temperatures.

Our dog happens to be a Rot/Weimaraner mix. She has the color of a Rot, but
the shape and temperament of a Weimaraner. She is VERY good with the kids,
but not much of a guard dog.
If your looking for a guard type dog, weinaraners tend to be big chickens.
We have taken her on hikes with us. She can go and go and go, and loves to
run, but she does need LOTS of water. about a liter of water every 3 miles.
We got ours as a puppy at a pet adoption place.

Good Luck.
Ben (Crazy Old Scout)

Subject: [pct-l] Ultralight Sleep Net

After hiking through the Sierra and the Three Sisters Wilderness on the =
PCT, Brawny has designed what we are calling the Ultralight Sleep Net. =
It is for folks who sleep under tarps, under the stars and in shelters =
during bug season. It is made of nylon mesh, and weighs approximately 2 =
ounces. It can also provide protection from flying insects while on =
breaks and sitting around camp.

If you'd like to see a photo and additional info, select the URL below, =

4 weeks ago, southbounder Ben "Bonafide" Armstrong stopped by Casa de
Luna in Green Valley on his way to Campo, and threw back a few cold ones at
the Lunatic Lounge.
On Sat. (11/10) the lounge went on the road and was there waiting to
welcome Ben to the Mexican Border and help him celebrate the end of his
journey in full lounge fashion complete with multi-colored umbrella, well
stocked ice chest, folding lawn chairs, and music to soothe the weary hiker.
We had a great time celebrating with him and listening to stories about
some of his many adventures. He's on his way back to North Carolina, and
we're back here in Green Valley waiting for next year's group to start
coming
through.

I have a favorite quote, found it at the water stash
(thanks to Amigos parents :) in the Hat Creek rim
section, in 2000:

In the end you find no one wins, and that the race was
only with yourself.

when that "inner speed demon" is afflicting me, the
quote brings back sanity

So, the race being only with oneself, the mileage data
is a personal thing, and no one really cares how fast
or slow a person has hiked. The only thing that
matters is honesty and integrity, and if you have
enough candy bars to get you into town.

I'm considering a short section hike in section C between Mission Creek
and Big Bear during the Thanksgiving holiday. Has anyone been there
very recently? Can you tell me anything about the snow conditions you
encountered?

I am planning to shop the pound for a new young dog, to be a home
protector and hiking companion for me. I prefer dogs in the 70 to 100
pound range. Can anyone recommend a breed or mix that loves to hike,
can handle high elevations and distances of 10 to 18 miles per day, is a
loyal and loving companion, not too hyper, and can get along with cats
and llamas?

Mad Monte would do if you would ease your weight restrictions.
