[pct-l] 1964 Wilderness act ( was: Congrats to Brian)

You asked:
>Exactly what provision in the Wilderness Act prohibits running
>Marathons or Ultra Marathons in wilderness areas?

I don't have any problem with people taking on the scenic trails with an ultra-marathon attitude. I run marathons myself, and had many over 30 mile days on the PCT this summer. And I think Jardine's attitude is admirable: if it's satisfying to you and it doesn't hurt anyone, it's all good. (I'm paraphrasing, of course).

And I agree that the scenic trails are, for the most part, deeply individual journeys, and that most thru-hikers won't recognize their personal significance for years to come.

Nevertheless, when I share stories from my hike, my goal is to get the listeners out on to a trail. Most of time, the way to do this is to concentrate on the accessible aspects, the day to day triumphs and struggles.

My problem with all of this Calendar Triple Crown business is that everything that nearly everyone -- Jeff Shaefer, Karen Berger included -- has said about it will only serve to get the same old marathon-running, outdoors-oriented people out there.
