I just returned from the JMT. I wore a longsleeve hiking shirt and long pants.
The bugs were not nearly as bad as previous years. I  probably could have not
used deet at all, and infact used very little. Covering up and carrying a head
net goes a long way. I also agree with Tom R about dusting or spraying your
clothes with a light deet spray. My hiking partner and I would rub excess deet
on each other's clothes and it also seemed to help.
