My experience with citronella in the Sierra was that it held off the
mosquitoes for approximately 15 minutes, until it evaporated...

Rosemary essential oil or Avon Skin-so-Soft worked for me for inside the
ears, around the nose, etc - seemed to keep the gnats at bay, also.

Otherwise I ignore DEET's potential mutagenicity - since I'm not using it on
a daily basis I just take the calculated risk that I'll die in a car crash
first.

Wait.  I've already survived a car crash.  I think it was the seat belt.
No, wait - maybe it was the cannister...

Can you tell I'm getting ready for a 6-day hike next week?
