Haven't you noticed that the first frame on every roll is usually a picture
of your shoes? Think how you're usually holding the camera as you advance to
the first frame of a fresh roll (unless you have one of those fancysmancy
motordrive self-loaders...
Anyway, load the roll with the time date stamp on, snap a frame for
reference and then turn it off....
Take it from a publication editor and news photog. who knows from personal
experience how frustrating it is when you have to crop an other wise great
photo around those numbers.
