[pct-l] best time for California portion of PCT?

Hello,

I'm toying with hiking just the California portion of the PCT in 2002,
and I'd be grateful for suggestions on the best time to do so.  If I don't
have to worry about avoiding storms in Oregon & Washington, would I start
later than the thru-hikers?  Or do conditions vary enough that I have to
wait til next year to ask this?
