Dan - I used one for the first half of my hike last
year.  It isn't that well constructed.  Mine began to
come apart at the seam very early into my hike.  I
wanted for the Sierra's, but I slept with my food
every night and didn't have a problem with bears.  As
for withstanding a bear I have heard that they are
able to crush everything and sometimes get to the
food.
