I would have to say Eagle Creek is just awesome. 
Definently take this alternate route into Cascade
Locks.  The hitch is easy into town.  

As for hitch hiking do as much as you can it adds to
the excitement of the trail.  I can remember being on
the hwy to Gov't Camp.  It was 5 pm and Dave and I
were hungry.  Two options 1)make dinner or 2)hitch
into town for a burger and fries.  Real food won.  We
were back at the trail head by 8 pm.  

Some of my most memorable experiences on the trail is
when I had to hitch hike.
