My favorite maps for hiking long distances in California are Tom
Harrison's maps. You can hike from the northern border of Yosemite to
Trail Pass, south of Mt. Whitney, on a set of five Harrison maps.
(Yosemite High Country, Mammoth High Country, Mono Divide High Country,
Kings Canyon High Country, and Mt. Whitney High Country). He also
publishes fine maps of the San Gabriels. I like the features of these
maps: pre-folded, plastic waterproof paper, full color, shading to help
you distinguish the landforms, and mileage distances between junctions
are given. They are reasonably priced. I prefer them for my summer
section hike because I get the big picture of the land I am traveling
through and If I want to take a long side hike or a bail out, I have
the map coverage to avoid getting lost.
