Agreed, but... in some areas the topographical features do not appear on the
map. E.g., the various badlands of Anza Borrego have numerous hills and
ridges about 30 feet high, and the maps have 40 foot contours, with gullies
going all different directions. A compass here sure helps.

As for hiking from Mexico to Canada, just use the sun to figure which way
Canada is and leave the heavy topos behind!
