[pct-l] Re: alternate routes

According to Karen Berger & Dan Smith in The PCT: a Hiker's Companion
the PCT used to follow the shorter route following the aqueduct
and it can be found in Wilderness Press's old PCT California guidebook.

"instead of a meandering, difficult up-and-down dry route through yet more
chaparral, the old route introduces hikers to a completely new experience: a
traverse of the Mojave Desert. Another advantage is that following the
aqueduct is flat, straight, and fast."
Also, instead of being at least 9 miles from both Tehachapi and Mojave, you
pass "within 3 miles of Mojave."

Does this make it permissible for those hiking from Mexico to Canada?
