[pct-l] Racing on the PCT



People racing on the PCT -- Good thing
Horsemen racing on the PCT -- Bad thing

Consider the impact of a medium sized pack train moving at a moderate
pace, then multiply that by, pick a number, to estimate the impact of
lots of individual competitive horsemen/women trying to get from point A
to point B in a hurry.  And you'd best be out of the way during that
last half mile gallop to the finish.

I spent 2 days hiking in sync with some kind of weekend ultra (people
running) in the San Bernadino's this summer and mostly enjoyed the
refreshment stops.  The volunteers really seemed into the concept of
feeding and nurturing a hungry hiker who wasn't in any hurry.  It was
kind of annoying when those impatient runners came up to the table and
just grabbed stuff -- no manners at all...
