Another option if you have the means is to hide a cache near the
trail head ahead of time.  Some may consider it impure to
do so...but that bottle of Merlot and canned food I cached near
Bishop pass made for a "fine" layover rest near the pass. (I used some
recycled ammunition boxes I purchased at a surplus store and buried
them- bear proof, watertight and as you know alcohol does not
freeze if the concentration is high (hic) enough!)...
