Yes Jeff, I still pack 60lb packs on trips of a week or more! Many climbers
are use to carring extra gear. Last year we did a 31 mile day with these
packs. I would be happy to e-mail anyone on the list pictures of these hikes
( from 77 or 99 ) Gear weight in 77 was 5 lbs. 14oz. for external frame pack,
now I use a 4lb 8 oz internal. Greg Hummel did a 43 mile day in 77 with a
loaded Kelty and could have walked Jardine into the ground even if Ray was
only carrying a popcycle stick. ( in 1977) People on the PCT in the 70's
carryed all their own water through dry desert sections which could be an
extra 2 and a half gallons. Boots were heavier. If your hit the Sierra's
early, extra gear is needed. What I'm saying is new gear has lightened loads
which is good for us. Eight pound packing is really not normal and should
rate as stunt hiking. Of course a hiker broke a record for fastest hike on
the AT last year ( he only carried his bottle ) HIKE MODERATELY PS If
Jardine hikes the trail next year and cuts his pack weight to 5lb 4 ozs, who
will step and go for a 3lb 5 oz. pack????? ( Yippy Skippy ) BAAAAAA go the
Sheep
