On my '97 thru hike my PUR Hiker never completely clogged, but it got very 
hard to pump by the time I got to Oregon.  The Hyatt Lake camp ground has 
excellent water pressure in their wash rooms and I ran the filter under the 
tap for about 2 minutes and I was able to blast off quite a bit of the brown 
discoloration.  After that it worked almost like new.
