[pct-l] Pur Water Filters
I guess that old adage "Individual mileage may vary" really applies to water
filters. Although I haven't thruhiked the PCT completely yet, I have done about
800 miles of it from Mt Whitney to Castle Crags..
I carried a PUR Scout and only used the single filter cartridge that originally
came with it. Even after that much use, it still pumps water at a pretty good
rate. I love the PUR for the high liters/minute flow that it gives me. I can
fill a 96 oz bladder in mere minutes. The one thing that I did differently than
most folk is that I filtered out of an REI collapsible bucket 99 percent of the
time. This really reduced sediment to almost nil...Maybe not feasable to carry
on a thruhike, but I never leave home without it....Just spoiled , I guess...
Maybe a better pre-filter is the secret to using a PUR directly out of a creek
or lake...I experiment with that this summer and see how it works. I really am
trying to get my life to a point where I can take 5 months or so off and do the
entire length in the near future and I would sure like to use my Scout on the
trip....I can't afford to replace the filter every month or so...too expensive.
I'll post my results after my trip this year. Haven't decided what sections to
hike yet...I would love to do WA and/or OR this season...
