In the San Felipe Hills, for example (100+ temps, no water), we tended to 
take a siesta at midday and hike till dark.  By cooking our dinner during 
this break, we used the dinner water ration early and didn't have to pack it 
during the afternoon.  This is common sense and common practice in the desert 
areas.  In Washington, on the other extreme, we hiked in the rain (or snow) 
all day and had dinner at dinner time, after setting up to get out of the 
rain.  If you want diversity, hike the PCT!
