Some other negatives:
Damage to trails in high use areas. I remember reading something about
this on the AT. Also, while I was in Alaska last summer working for the
Forest Service I took off on a hike of the Chilkoot Trail. If I recall
correctly, once you left Alaska and entered Canada you could not use your
trekking poles because it was a high use trail/resulting trail damage/etc.
I foresee this happening to some places in the lower 48.
