Hi Drew, there are a couple of ways you can do this.

If you want to go as far as Drakesbad, the resort within the park
boundaries, for instance, you might be able to hitch or depending on how
busy I am at the trailhead on highway 36, I might be able to pick you up
and bring you to Chester. From there you can take the Susanville Rancheria
transport from Chester to Red Bluff or Redding (it goes to both). This bus
runs 5 days a week and leaves from Holiday market in Chester every day
except Sunday at 8:50 a.m.

If you are planning on going somewhere else in the park, the option to go
to the south entrance visitor's center is a good one, and you might be able
to find a ride all the way to Red Bluff, or at least down to highway 36
where you could hitch another ride to Red Bluff. You could also go to the
north entrance visitor's center and hitch to Redding, or to highway 44 and
hitch another ride to Redding.

To me, if you just want to say you have been "in" the park, the Drakesbad
choice would be the easiest, surest way to get where you want to go.
http://drakesbad.com/index.php/dining/ Note they do feed hikers (usually a
special hiker meal at half price or the gourmet menu at full price and have
other hiker services as well. I have not talked with them this year to
find out what they offer and it changes from year to year. Hikers may not
stay at the ranch, but there is a forest service campground 1/4 mile away,
and there are other options.

If you want to stop short of Lassen National Park, and just get off the
trail at highway 36 before you enter the park, you can get a ride from me,
or hitch, or get a ride from someone else who might be out there, and get
to Chester (8 miles east) and catch the Rancheria Bus.

You might also try contacting them directly. They are very friendly to
hikers, and you might be able to arrange a pickup right at the highway 36
trailhead, or if you want to catch them at the highway 36/89 intersection
at the south end of the park, you could contact them to see if they would
be willing to do that. I say they're friendly to hikers, because if they
see you hitching they'll stop and pick you up and take you from trail to
town or town to trail.

Good luck,
Piper's Mom

Planning to do a section hike from Walker Pass to Mt Lassen this summer. I
have friends and family in SoCal that can get me to Walker, but I need to
come up with a plan to get home from Mt Lassen. Or rather, to get to Red
Bluff or Redding where I can rent a car.

I've hitched in National Parks before, even though it is not really
allowed. Any thoughts as to what other transportation options there might
be?

Drew/Happy Hour
