Another place to cut your teeth on desert hiking is the Grand Canyon. While different than the PCT, it is all the challenges of desert hiking: water-carrying capacity, water management, wind, cold nights, and hot days. The scenery is incredibly beautiful, unlike hiking anywhere else. There are many levels of difficulty to choose from--anywhere from corridor trails to off trail scrambles. You might consider a hike down to Bright Angel and over to Clear Creek, or a section of the Tonto Trail. April is a great month for the Grand Canyon and early May; late May gets too hot. Mid to late September is also doable.
