Welcome.  My choice is: Southbound from Tahoe City on the Tahoe Rim Trail 16 (?) miles to the PCT.  South through Echo Lakes to Meiss Meadows Historical home and barn.  The TRT goes left and get picked up at Big Meadows Trailhead or go straight 3 miles to pickup at Carson Pass.  You will need a Wilderness Permit for Desolation Wilderness. $5/night/person.  Obtain the Tahoe Rim Trail book.  Tahoe Rim Trail office is in Incline Village, NV.  Options are many.  Brick is correct that the TRT has all the elements of long distance hiking packed into a 175 mile trail.  Depending on time of year you may meet many northbounders and discussions will impact your daily mileage.
