TrailHacker and I started hiking at 3:30 and found a spot to camp about 9 miles in. A little nook in the bushes just the right size for our tent. I heard nothing that night. There was plenty of "security theater" in the air that first day while we were hiking but nothing at night. There are actually very many locations you could put a tent and get some sleep that first night. So if you're feeling good and pass a decent spot, have no fear, there's probably another decent spot in another mile or two.
