Miner's right. It would be quicker to walk than to drive.

It would be far easier for your partner to go to Red's Meadow via
Mammoth Lakes which is a straight run up highway 395 from
Independence. Its only 1 to 1.5 days of hiking further north then VVR
is and there is even bus service along the 395 Corridor via the
Eastern Sierra Transit Authority.
