You do realize that they are on the Opposite sides of the Sierra
Nevada and you have to go north to Hwy 120 and through Yosemite, or
south and then over Walker Pass to get around to the other side?  Its
that whole trail without crossing a road for 200+ miles thing.

It would be far easier for your partner to go to Red's Meadow via
Mammoth Lakes which is a straight run up highway 395 from
Independence.  Its only 1 to 1.5 days of hiking further north then VVR
is and there is even bus service along the 395 Corridor via the
Eastern Sierra Transit Authority.
