They may actually attract bears.

Just because you have anecdotal experience using mothballs and
avoiding bear encounters doesn't mean it wasn't simply luck.

In thousands of miles of travel in bear country, I've never had a bear
encounter either, so I could simply say "they don't like me, so I
don't need to worry" but that would be wrong too.
