Hey, not all REI reps are the same!  Bill Berg, one of the Kelty Kids from 1977, albeit an ancient thru-hiker like me, has worked in the Duarte REI for years (last time, IIRC, he doesn't anymore) and is plenty savy to thru-hiker and ultra-light strategies, gear and issues.
