Good evening, Treerings,

In my less-than-humble, and decidedly biased, opinion a good quality – but
light and simple – camera is best because on a hike where photography is
not the prime objective opportunities will pass un-captured because it’s
just too much trouble. Any photo – even from one of those wretched cell
phones – is better than a shot that was passed up with professional-grade
equipment.

If you are already significantly experienced with “the good stuff” you
probably wouldn’t be asking the question. If you are not experienced, the
trail isn’t a good place to learn. There’s a truism in mechanical design
that says whenever an adjustment is built into an item we also build in the
opportunity for it to be out of adjustment. Consistent with that, hikers
with big, fancy cameras have told me that for convenience they keep the
thing on fixed, nominal settings all/most of the time – meaning it’s a
heavy, $1,000 point-and-shoot camera.
