[pct-l] Fire and smokers

Tortoise,
That's certainly true of some smokers - but not all.  I have memories of two very different smokers. The first was Chuck, who served in the U.S. Army with me. Chuck always carried an ash tray in his pocket. That's where the butts went. The second was my brother-in-law, who was a Chauffeur and drove a limo for a CEO. His own car, which he replaced with a new one every year, was always impeccably clean - in and out. As was his home. I once caught him, during a visit with us, emptying his car's ashtray along side our driveway. He didn't realize that I saw him do it. I called him an ASSHOLE, lectured him, and made him clean up his mess. He was embarrassed and I didn't care.

Some smokers are careless. Some just act like the whole world (except maybe their house and office) is their ashtray. Many smokers just drop their butts wherever they are when they finish the smoke.

At on spot while passing through Vasquez Rocks Park I looked down from the saddle and saw a cigarette laying near the edge of a 3' wide part of the trail. It wad out but it did not appear that it had been put out. There was dry vegetation within inches. That's one way fires are started. Also, even if it is out, it is litter. I'm sure it was dropped by a careless day-hiker.
