Rhiannon, et al....

If you don’t want a contract you can get yourself a used / unlocked ATT (GSM) iPhone and put a “Straight Talk” (http://www.straighttalk.com/) SIM card inside. These are available at Walmart. Their monthly, unlimited “talk, text and data” plan is $45 with no contract. I think the SIM cards cost $14.95. Straight Talk uses AT&T’s wireless network so your coverage will be the same as any AT&T phone. That way – you only pay month to month, have full web / data access, unlimited minutes, etc for your hike. The iPhone also makes an excellent GPS unit and a solar charger for the trail will keep you powered.

When you are all done – resell the phone and do what you wish with the SIM...

Good luck...

Bill
