Agreed - silnylon is a huge pain in the butt to sew. I had success with
pre-ironing seams where I wanted folds (low heat, be careful not to damage
the fabric) and using small binder clips to generally control things.
I made my own Shires-style tarptent several years ago and enjoyed it as a
project, but the commercial offerings from the specialty manufacturers these
days are far beyond what I could make myself. I use a manufactured tent
now.
