Good planning is half (if not more of) the battle.

You'll probably want to find ways to drastically reduce your pack-weight
from you may be used to.  Start checking out info on ultralight/lightweight
backpacking.  Then practice by going out and hiking with your lightweight
gear.  Shedding weight off your pack is a fun process.
