I hypothesize that the problem in this section is the increased cross
infection due to the large number hikers socializing in KM. There are
plenty of references that a major cause of infection in the
backcountry is hiker to hiker due to poor hand washing habits, not
water -> hiker.

Lots of folks in civilization have Guardia, especially if you have
contact with someone who has a diaper age child in daycare.
