Actually, in recent years, I can think of several individuals who got burned by thinking they could get away without raingear or a shelter and ending up almost hypothermic due to being caught in rain or snow in SoCal.  Rain/snow in the SoCal mountains isn't that rare in the month of May.  I know one girl who came into McIver's Cabin last year in a hypothermic state due to the rain and a hunter had to drive her off the mountain as she had no packcover,no raingear, no shelter.  2008 had several discovering a significant snow storm after leaving Wrightwood.  And let's forget how bad 2006 was.
