[pct-l] Car Shuttle

Will anyone be available Wed afternoon, 8/11 to give me a ride from Onion Valley
trailhead to Horseshoe Meadows?  I would be happy to compensate with gas money,
dinner, and undying appreciation.  So, if anyone is in the area and this works
out, great!  Otherwise, I will be hitchhiking on one or the other end of my
hike.  Then again, maybe Switchback will recue me on his trike!

AsABat writes: Don't forget your guidebook, the "Pacific Crest Bicycle
Trail" by Bil Paul (yes, only that's spelled correct). Amazon has them from
$99, so even though out of print for 20 years it must still be popular. Yes
I have a copy, no Switchback you can't have it.  Unlike the hikes of my good
friend Switchback, who at his advanced age hikes only in his dreams, I did
just return from a real, live, fully supported hike of Section P from Castle
Crags to Etna. I was met each night by a beautiful woman in a camper van who
gave me a hot meal and cold drinks, offered me a hot shower, and shared a
soft bed with me. What a way to hike. And yes, AsABat does have the most
wonderful wife in the world.

Switchback replies: Well, congratulations on your hike.  Well done by both
you and your better half.  Yes, there are many who make fun of us senior
combat veterans and our now limited trail abilities. Age and war injuries
have finally taken their toll.  But in spite of the hazing and harassment,
we labor on in good cheer.  We remember that there would be no trail or
country without our sacrifices.

Say, I wonder if anyone is buying this and feels sorry for me.  Heh, heh,
heh.

My experience is based only on the first 1,000 miles - from Campo to Sonora
Pass.? I had a Blackberry with AT&T service.? Several places I had service when
Verizon carriers didn't, e.g., VVR only has AT&T service.? I can't remember a
place where Verizon had service but AT&T didn't.? Most of the time, we either
both had it or both didn't.

Switchback replies: Yes, Ground Pounder is correct.  Also, the PCT is populated
by many good people.  It is my job to take advantage of them.  I will become a
icon of the trail as I motor up and down the PCT on my trike.  Hikers will want
to get rides into down and put their packs into my trike trailer.  This will be
like a taxi service.  I will have to get some maps out of the PCT, CDT, and AT
to see what routes I will be using to harass, I mean service, the hikers.  This
is too cool.  Copious amounts of fun.

Say, I will be on the PCT on Sunday, August 22.  I will be at Tuolumne Meadows
Tent Camp. I will do some hiking up Lyle Canyon and across Tuolumne Meadows.  I
will check things out and see if there are any hikers to harass.  Should be a
blast.  I wonder if any SoBo hikers will be around?

I thank you.

I used Verizon in 2009 and hiked with others who had ATT (Sprint and Tmobile
have poor coverage in comparison).  It seemed like ATT and Verizon had similar
coverage or it slightly favored ATT in the first half of California.  After that
it seemed like the service slightly favored Verizon as I had coverage in a few
places that ATT didn't.  Halfmile's website (of Halfmile's PCT Map fame) has
been collecting cell and WiFi coverage on the PCT from hikers so you might want
to check it out.  It's not complete since most hikers don't submit info during
their hike, but it at least its something.

I either service will work fine for you.  Pick the phone you like best and use
that as your criteria.  Though I hear from some iPhone owners that ATT's 3G data
coverage (not their voice coverage) isn't as widespread as Verizons; but thats
2nd hand info so take it with a grain of salt.

The iPhone is a relatively static entity.  The GPS capabilities are documented
and the apps are reasonably well known.

I'm kinda an iPhone guy.  I know a bit about Android phones, but not a lot about
the map/GPS apps available for them.

The GPS capabilities will vary depending on the handset you buy and the carrier
it is on - it can/will vary with different combinations of these two factors as
well as version of Android (a little).
