As an animal deterrent, I don't believe you'll find anything that rivals pepper
spray.  For me, a gun is only good for one reason: shooting other hikers.
Say you're hiking in Alaska with a close friend or even your spouse.  Out of
no where, a gigantic grizzly breaks into a full charge 30 yards away.  In
this situation, the only reasonable thing to do is shoot your hiking partner
(in the leg of course) and run like a Comanche.
