I tend to Agree with Sly, 
When I went in 2005, I mailed my food and Bear can to Kennedy Meadows on May 8th, 2005. and arrived there on June 18th. They held it without problem.

I bounced my bounce box from Big Bear to Kennedy Meadows, also without issue.
And picked up everything. Note that they charged per package...

The best thing to do is sent it Priority Mail and bounce the gear box up 
the trail.   I'd do Big Bear, Mojave, KM so it doesn't stay in any one 
place too long.
