I forgot about rattlesnakes. It is a every day concern where I live. My dogs are both rattlesnake trained and vaccinated so I forget that it is a issue for others. San Diego County is the poisonous snake capital of the USA. More rattlesnakes here than any where else in the world.

And there are quite a few rattlesnakes in this area too! So you might want to keep them on leash for their safety as well. In 2004, I met a german shorthair pointer that was going to thru-hike, his people had him taken off before Warner Springs due to feet problems. They had assured everyone who asked at KO, that he would be fine as he had hiked with them all the time, so I too, would say 'booties' are necessary!

If you have not been in this area before you should know that the ground is mainly DG (decomposed granite) and is particularly abrasive to the dogs pads. If your dogs do not have shoes on they will be sore before you reach Julian. This from experience.
