And there are quite a few rattlesnakes in this area too! So you might want to keep them on leash for their safety as well. In 2004, I met a german shorthair pointer that was going to thru-hike, his people had him taken off before Warner Springs due to feet problems. They had assured everyone who asked at KO, that he would be fine as he had hiked with them all the time, so I too, would say 'booties' are necessary!

If your dogs do not have shoes on they will be sore before you reach Julian. This from experience.
