Hi all, I'm a newbie on this so hope I am not asking repetitive questions; trying to find out current snow conditions in the Sierra Nevada. Checked Trail report on PCTA site but a bit sparse.

I am an Aussie hiker coming over to hike from Meeks Bay near Lake Tahoe down to Mt Whitney, between 13 July to 24 August.  I am hoping to use the PCT mixed with some of the Tahoe-Yosemite Trail and then later with the JMT.

I am trying to find out whether there will still be much snow across the passes in mid July in the northern parts and whether I should bring an ice axe and crampons?  The Desolation Wilderness Parks people told me that would be the case in mid to late June, but I am hoping it will have melted by midJuly...

Also: I have a bulky 3 season down sleeping bag (weighing 1.2kg from memory).  I also have a silk inner sheet and a thermal polypro liner and am wondering if those last two together would be enough at night during July August (when combined with clothing such as down jacket and thermal top and leggings and maybe waterproof overpants)?  I have been on the road for 6 months already so don't have the luxury of any other bags from home...

Any advice greatly appreciated,
Khalin  :)
