[pct-l] 4th of July

The hikers won the Judges' Trophy for their display and participation in the
4th of July parade. The banner, the certificate, and the prize blanket
(yes, blanket) are all here at Hiker Heaven.

Last year there were only a handful of hikers in Independence on the 4th.
Though their numbers were small, two hikers participated in the 10K run, one
of them taking 1st place and the other placing near the top. They were last
seen chowing down at the BBQ.

The town puts on a wonderful down-home celebration, with really great
fireworks in the evening. Jeff and I were there again last year after doing
a stretch of the JMT. Highlights included the arts & craft fair, pancake
breakfast, pie and ice cream sale, the tri-tip BBQ dinner, and games for
kids of all ages. The best game was bullfrog racing. They had barrels full
of bullfrogs and little kids. There were frogs everywhere and pandemonium
ensued, like it was scripted straight from Samuel Clemens. One of my
favorite July 4ths ever.

p.s. no bullfrogs were hurt or died in the games, but I suspect they were
pretty annoyed.

In '06, inspired by a couple of hikers, a group of thrus in Independence
marched in the parade, complete with a text adorned bedsheet ("This is what
freedom is all about!") and ice axes raised high.  Highlights are in this
film I've heard about called "Even More Walking".  :)

If memory serves me well (which is doesn't always!), in previous years there
has been some PCT participation in 4th of July events in Independence
(perhaps Monty Tam wrote about it?). I think there was even a prize-winning
float.

Anyone doing that sort of thing this time around? I'm writing a piece about
4th of July events for examiner.com  and love giving PCTer's the credit
they're due.
