Here's some more...

*Mt. Whitney Permit:*
The U.S. Forest Service has implemented a $15 reservation fee to climb
Mt. Whitney, exit and re-enter the Whitney Portal on the east side. Plan
to exit and re-enter within 48 hours.* Reservations for Mt. Whitney must
be received at least 60 DAYS prior to the expected date of entry into
the Mt. Whitney zone*. Requests received less than 60 days in advance
will be returned. If you would like to climb Mt. Whitney, include the
$15 fee (per person) along with your permit request, making sure that
you do so at least 60 days in advance.

For additional information regarding the reservation requirements
contact the Inyo National Forest Wilderness Permit Reservation Office,
351 Pacu Lane, Ste 200, Bishop, CA 93514 or (760) 873-2483. Permit
information can also be found at
www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/mtwhitney
<http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/inyo/recreation/wild/mtwhitney>.

Reading it, I'll almost ready agree with those that say you don't have
to pay the $15 but it's not very clear on the permit itself. If it's
$15 to access Whitney Portal why ask the question whether you are or
not? Why say it's $15 to climb? Why not make it clear if you are not
accessing Whitney Portal, it's not $15.

Anyway, I'm done beating this horse.
