Speaking of the political or other changes that happen when away...

Some friends of mine were hiking during September 11 in Montana. They  
remember thinking how peaceful it was. They couldn't put their finger  
on what was different. They joked to each other, what if the end of  
the world happened while we were out here? Then they came back and  
found out why it was so quiet: no planes flew during their hike.
