The ''Gathering  &  Grazing'' method would be one way of accomplishing 
your dream.
Another way would be the  ''Chickens on a Leash'' method....Chickens lay 
eggs, so every morning you have fresh eggs and every evening you stick a 
chicken in the pot.
Eggs  and meat.....lots of protein.....just what weary hiker 
needs......and it all walks.
Just make sure you also bring a rooster or two along so you don't 
deplete your flock before the end of your journey
