in Mammoth Lakes there's also a campground. It's at the eastern end of town but still within walking distance from downtown. I stayed there in 06. The host was very nice, he had a hiker specific site, or a hiker price or both (can't remember for sure). There's no shower though but it's possible to take a shower in some other facility nearby.
