Reinhold,
I would never suggest skipping any of the trail. I suggested hking down to Red's, then riding back to Agnew Meadows, never missing an inch of the trail, but gaining an addtional hot meal. Some might want to camp at Agnew Meadows or Soda Springs, both Shuttle stops, if they find Mammoth too pricy. Also, southbounders can exit by shuttle from Agnew to Mammoth. Perhaps the pain meds from your arthroscopic surgery made you overlook that part of my post. Hope you are recovering well. See you at the kickoff.
