Getting to Southern Terminus and Back Home, From Iowa.

I would like to spend a couple weeks hiking the PCT over semester
break, most
likely December 27th to January 10th, but I need to be able to get to
the PCT...somehow. At the earliest, I would be able to leave Iowa on
the 26th.  Driving all the way in one shot shouldn't be too much of a
problem, I am pretty good with napping every several hours for a long
period of time, so as long as I can take a rest stop every 4 or so
hours, I should be able to get to CA sometime around the 27th.  Classes
for next semester start on January 12th, I could cut it really close
and get back to Ames, IA Sunday night, or maybe even early Monday
morning.


I have been trying, without much success, to find out how I can
possibly get to the southern terminus of the Pacific Crest Trail, from
Iowa. I am willing to drive, if it is the only option, but I will need
a way to get back to my vehicle (and a place to put it for a couple
weeks). If it will be cheaper to take a bus, rather than the cost of gas and paying for parking for a couple of weeks, I would be willing to to that also.

 The only option that I can think of is to hike down
the trail for a week, and hike back the next week, but I would like to cover as much distance as
possible in the two week period. 
 I would like to know if there is any way I can (cheaply) hike
North Bound from the southern terminus, then get a cheap ride back to my
vehicle. Or even skip driving down all together, and find a bus/other
service that can get me to the southern terminus, and once I reach my
end point after two weeks, take me back to Iowa. I haven't fully decided on my end point, but weather might start to become an issue before the two weeks are even up.  I would really like to be able to go on this trip (it is part of a larger goal of mine), but if it is not feasible, I can accept it and plan a trip for some other time.
