I am absolutely taking my D70 gear along on my PCT-Or section hike next fall:

Don't know how Beartooths-Montana compares to PCT-Or, but I know the gear he took (Nikon D2X, 17-55mm, 75-300mm, and apparently a decent tripod) weighs quite a bit more than the kit I'll be carrying.
I disagree with certain other PCT-Lers who have said a hike has be either about hiking or about photography, take your pick, one or the other, but not both... it can and will be about both, for me. I am at the point in my life where I can afford to buy ultralight gear to offset the weight penalty that so many perceive as excessive in a DSLR kit over a point-&-shoot, and I wouldn't seriously consider going without my photography gear.
