Well, I don't think it's a "guy thing" Jeff, cuz I consider myself a "gear head" and I'm female! I never get tired of talking gear or hearing about/ researching all the latest stuff. (Well, almost never). I must admit, I thought I was going to go out of my mind (no wise cracks!!) with the bear cannister discussion....ad nauseum!!! Still, it was helpful. I notice on this list, if you want people to respond and if you want a lot of posts, just open a discussion about gear!

Anyway, I have the Black Diamond headlamp......takes 3 AA batteries and I LOVE it. I even went into the bathroom at Eastern Mtn Sports and turned off all the lights (pitch dark in there) and tried several on before I decided. The BD was far superior to any of the others.....even with the same (or more) battery power. Still, when I learned about the E+Lite at an UL backpacking lecture at ALDHA-E in Oct, I was ON it!!! I wouldn't go back to the BD now, except for "car camping" or the like. I'm willing to sacrifice a little brightness (no wise cracks) for weight reduction. I'm becomin' a believer!!!

Wheeew

(just to consider light and warmth) that keep my base weight in the double
digits - albeit very low double digits. What's the expression, "mind the
ounces and the pounds will take care of themselves"?

It's so hard to give up the beauty of machined aluminum and shiny enamel,
like on my Mini-MagLight, though it's sure got its performance trade-offs
(long beam, variable beam, battery life, bulb life, weight)

It's so hard to give up that huge light spread from the Petzl, though it's
not nearly so classy as the Mini and, like you say, there's that weight
thing.

Boys and their toys; it must be a genetic thing with us. ...
