I used the sharp TM-20 on my PCT thru-hike. It worked pretty well. A bit of
advice though: don't fall on it or explode DEET all over it. It will break!
There are other pocketmail devices made my other manufacturers. I saw one
from JVC on the trail. I think it is cheaper, but doesn't have all the
features of the sharp. The sharp has a schedule feature that I kept my
itenerary in.
I did experience problems sending from various phones. And in some instances
I couldn't receive e-mails. It doesn't work with digital cell or satillite
phones.
