The "other" real knock for thru hikers is that you can't leave town with a measured amount of fuel, at least in small increments. Why carry 10 days of fuel if your next stop is 3 days away?
IMHO, canister stoves are not best for thru hikers......but for folks doing other things where weight optimization and postal/local resupply are not so critical like weekend trips, or long/large unsupported trips like expeditions. They sure are easy to use though....
